Humans colonizing Mars is a great idea on paper but if it were to happen I think some thought should be taken before starting it.

Unilateral support in funding such a project equally from all nations should be part of it. Trillions of dollars is not an easy number at all for any one nation to bear.

The major problem I see happening though is a war breaking out ver it because of what form of government should run the Mars colony. I am sure everyone will say democracy and think it is the best thing since sliced bread....but many nations do not feel that way and this alone could be the deal breaker causing a major war on earth.

Another issue is food source supplies for an entire colony. Seems to me we have a hard enough time feeding people here on earth already let alone sending it to Mars too. My idea is to send everyone to Mars leaving a relativley small number on earth to claim back entire cities as farm land to grow crops etc.

This would do a few things such as restore the earth to a more natural order as to air quality, and general balance of nature. Then when it was balanced people could be allowed back to earth with a much stricter air pollution control policy as well as housing development structure.

My single biggest problem with this is that we can't even manage the current planet we are on, what makes you think Mars is going to be any better or dfferent than earth in the end?

if i had the option of eliminating one gov't funded program, NASA would be gone in a second...

i believe that paying taxes is really just purchasing a share in public benefit... im not getting my share of space programs. when you arent satisfied with a product or service, what do you do? return the product or stop buying the service. well i want my money back.

i think it is especially stupid to continue spending money to go to the moon.... we spend millions of dollars to go to the moon way too often and we bring back a bunch of stupid rocks.... i can go to my driveway and get some rocks, i dont need to spend millions of dollars to do it, either.
i dont know about you, but i, as with other humans, like to learn and find out about new things.

and no, they would not develop a way to live without oxygen and water. they would develop a way to recycle oxygen and water up there, retard. plus, we already have tons of ideas and technology that can supply us an almost endless amount of oxygen and water.

and thats why we invent. we'll learn how to control gravity, recycle water and oxygen, which will also be a huge benefit on earth too. there can't be any invention or advancements without a challenge, and space is that challenge.

and the gov't cannot tailor their tax program to your wants.

i'd like my great great great great great great grandchildren to have somewhere cool to vacation other than hawaii or whatever.

thats fine but dont forget the 1000's of square miles of earth that is still uninhabited...

as for R&D and products coming from NASA and space development, are there any that we couldnt live without?

well, we've certainly learned a great deal about pollution and conservation. i mean, i dont think people knew about ozone during the industrial revolution. i think that the gov't can apply the lessons we learnt that to a new colony on another planet.

most of the countries we have beef with cannot afford sending a spacecraft in orbit let alone go to another planet. i dont think we'll have MUCH conflict on property in mars. we'll probably have a couple of spiffy peace treaties too.

most inventions nowadays are to make life convenient. i like having my life convenient. i'm sure many other people do too.

and i certainly dont want to live in the sahara or the amazon

And again the idea of American superiority comes through...this is what I am talking about as being a key issue

No we didn't know about ozone and how pollution affects the earth but now that we do we don't even enforce the laws we have in place and instead just charge them a few extra bucks a year in fines and look the other way as though it never happened. Heaven forbid we hold industry as well as government liable for their actions. Why do you think the US didn't sign the Kyoto Treaty? Oh yeah because we are one of the single largest polluters in the nation and don't want to be held accountable for it.

first of all, no need to call me a retard.

you cant recycle something that doesnt exist in the first place.

aside from human life not prospering on a planet with little to zero water and oxygen, plant life (vegetables to EAT) and animals (meat to EAT) would also have a difficult time prospering.

i dont expect the gov't to cater to my needs but i can tell you that im not the only one in this nation that questions why my money is being spent so carelessly.... im sure you yourself can think of a gov't program you'd like to reduce spending on.

there's plenty of water on mars. the problem is that it's all frozen. however, it is water, and where there's water, there's oxygen.

I understand your point and I see the opposite. I feel that NASA is not getting enough money. I don't feel they are stuipd rocks. They are things we can learn from.

There is low gravity on Mars as compared to earth, there's not "no gravity".
