I believe the NSX went out of mass production in 96 and began to be hand built in 97. The pre 97 NSX's are not nearly as fast and reliable. The NSX is much more beautiful in my opinion and i think it would be cool to own the first car to ever implement VTEC. Also, Its supposed to be one of the most reliable cars ever built. More reliable then a civic. Try getting that out of any other high end car. Anyways, will a ZO6 beat an NSX.......Hands down. Which would i rather own? Hands down the NSX. In my opinion your buying the legend. Not just specs and 1/4 mile times.
Ben
P.S. Im not 100% sure what year they went from the assembly line to being hand built.

Except for Porsches, I can't think of a single other exotic that has excellent reliability ratings besides the NSX. Ferraris and Lambos have long storied histories of "interesting" design decisions which proved costly to owners in the long run. Lotus' are notorious for their difficult upkeep, especially the turbo V8 Esprit... TVR and older Jaguar parts are supposedly rarer than hens teeth... etc. etc. etc.
The NSX may be just under the C5 Corvette in performance, but I personally prefer it in just about every other category - interior quality, body design, build quality, engine sound, etc. etc. Every little detail seems to fit just right ...

When the NSX was first introduced, Honda built a special factory at Tochigi, next to the Motegi Twin Ring racetrack. It's staffed with their hand-picked best factory workers from around the world. The NSX has been built there, by hand, ever since it was introduced in 1990, and that is still true today.
You can read in this book all about how the NSX is built.

However, you are correct when you say that the pre 1997 NSX is not as fast as the '97 and later NSX. That's because they enlarged the engine to 3.2 liters for an extra 20 hp, and they changed to the six-speed manual transmission.
I know for a fact that in the past every single NSX ever built has been hand built. When I say hand built I mean actually pushed by people from one stage of the build to the next. No Mitsubishi robots tacking parts on or rolling the car through an assembly line till a complete car pops out the other end. Every part installed can be traced back to the employee who checked the part out of stock and tightened the bolts. The NSX must pass very strict quality tests before it can even move on to the next stage of the build, even silly stuff like the panel gap widths are measured and have set limits- if it fails even one inspection, it goes back. An NSX costs so much because you are getting a quality sports car that has a reliability rate that no sports car manufacturer has been able to match. If you have ever owned a Porsche you know what I mean.
I don't care what the mullets say, I have yet to see Honda quality in any American car. This fact makes me sick because I'm an American and I'd be proud to say our cars are of a higher quality- the fact is I can't. I have owned American cars in the past and I own one now a 1995 Cadillac Seville SLS- it's junk, only has 70,000 miles on it and has been to the shop so many times I have lost track. It currently leaks oil all over my drive way. My little '97 Civic, 60,000 miles has NEVER been to the shop- EVER. In fact I can list on one hand how many times all four Honda vehicles I have owned here and in Japan have been to the shop. Both my Fords were the same way as were the Dodges. But I assume we all know this since I'm guessing most of us own Honda products here.
If you could see the assembly line where the NSX is built in Japan you'd understand why you pay so much for an NSX. Real blood, sweat and tears go into making it. The people on the floor turning the wrenches care about what they put out, they are not Union blind and ready to stike the minute they don't get a cost of living raise.
If owning a quality sports car means I'm 1/10th of a second slower in a 1/4 mile than a big American built V8 then so be it. I'm done wasting my hard earned money on American car manufacturers. I have tried to go back and tell myself that the American built cars are just as good as a Honda but I end up getting screwed over in the end. Never again.

nsx all the way. like everyone here has said, it may not be as fast, but the quality and rarity of it make it a supirior car to own. i bet only about 1 out of every 100 people autocross their nsx...the rest just enjoy driving it around in the comfort of it's hand-made interior.
