a grocery store is slightly different. you run in at 5 to close to grab something you get it and get out. you aren't planning on being in there past close

you walk in to a restaurant at 5 to close you KNOW you will be in there once they close

now see that's different

i have had people walk in at 5 to close and walk right to me in the kitchen and gone look we know you close in five minutes we are really hungry and want to eat here, i have $20 for you if you can stay open late and fire the open pit back up for ribs.

cases like that of course i'll stay open for them, hell i've even done it for something as simple as then sending a beer back to the kitchen for me (yes i could drink on the job)

Then you should've told your idiot boss that the best way to prevent this kind of BS is to close the kitchen 1 hour before closing time. it's really not that hard to think a solution for this problem. Most reataurant will have a kitchen closing time. Actually here they have a reduce menu time, then a kitchen closing time...

i spent a couple years at a chain resteraunt and yeah it sucked but your open and you can close up some of the stuff. thats why you are scheduled for half hour to hour after the resteraunt closes so you can close up shop.

chinese food takes ten minutes most to make. i worked at a resteraunt for a while delivering and was in the kitchen all the time. those bastards should just make the shit and be done.
