i had an ambidextrous AR but i sold that a while back

and yes, cut off the fsb.

he also smoothed out the trigger. it's at about 5lbs now. before he said it was "off the scale." i think he meant literally. :hsugh:

after i get a few other things out of the way I might go with an aftermarket trigger on 'em

Back from the Appleseed shoot. It was loads of fun. I didn't bother having my AQT targets scored because I clearly wasn't even close to the minimum to be qualified. I improved a lot on the standing position over the course of the weekend, but I sucked big time on the two rapid fire stages. I also sucked on the last stage because I am pretty much only effective out to 100 yards without a bipod. These were simulated AQT targets because we were shooting .22s on a 25 yard range.

I discovered that the sights on my Marlin sucked, with my bad eyesight (srsly need a new prescription) I didn't have enough resolution to see when the front post was lined up the rear semi-buckhorn sight because the notch was too small. My sighting in targets looked like I shot them with a shotgun. I ended up borrowing one of the instructor's 10/22 with a scope, I was then actually able to shoot groups. They said for us optically challenged folks, no shame in using some glass. But, in the end, it was quite enjoyable and I highly recommend attending a shoot if there's one in your area.

Cliffs: Appleseed shoot was loads of fun. I suck at shooting without a steady rest. Recommend going, just don't bring a bolt action .22, go with semi-auto with a detachable magazine (tube magazines can be used but I wouldn't, my sister and her boyfriend can attest to that). Use a scope if your eyes suck.

Here's a repost for you guys:

I'm thinking about picking up something for home protection and occasional outdoor target practice. Give me the pros vs. cons on a handgun or shotgun.

Seems like a shotgun would be where it's at for home protection due to intimidation factor, aiming doesn't have to be as precise, ability to beat somebody with it if you're out of ammo (would this be stupid?). The major drawback, of course, is size. I can't think of anywhere inconspicuous to put a shotgun in my room where I would still be able to get to it on short notice. I'm not a Texan and I'm not just going to lean that shit in the corner of my room.

I've never owned a gun, but I've tried out a pretty decent variety since many of my friends own or work in law enforcement.

I'm partial to shotguns for home defense. They generally have greater stopping power than handguns, are less liable to overpenetrate, and you are more likely to hit your target, provided you are properly shouldering and pointing the shotgun. Downsides, more collateral damage, they are less maneuverable around corners, and easier to take away from you in a struggle because the perp can grab the end of the barrel and gain more leverage. Handguns are easily concealed, more maneuverable, easier to hold on to in a struggle. Handguns require well aimed shots (difficult to do under pressure), have less stopping power, and have more potential to overpenetrate.

Though there are drawbacks, shotgun is my weapon of choice for home defense/zombie invasion. If you are well trained and practice frequently, a handgun will also serve you well. Or you can just get both.

On a side note, if I lived in the boonies and had no neighbors within a 5 mile radius, I think the AR-15 or M1A would become my weapon of choice.

At household distances, you damn sure better be aiming a shotgun well. You certainly can miss.
