Here's a repost for you guys:

I'm thinking about picking up something for home protection and occasional outdoor target practice. Give me the pros vs. cons on a handgun or shotgun.

Seems like a shotgun would be where it's at for home protection due to intimidation factor, aiming doesn't have to be as precise, ability to beat somebody with it if you're out of ammo (would this be stupid?). The major drawback, of course, is size. I can't think of anywhere inconspicuous to put a shotgun in my room where I would still be able to get to it on short notice. I'm not a Texan and I'm not just going to lean that shit in the corner of my room.

I've never owned a gun, but I've tried out a pretty decent variety since many of my friends own or work in law enforcement.
