It should be connected to the WAN port. After you enter in your username and pw, search around and look for something that says to connect to service or something. It should be under the status tab, I think.

Ok I'm gonna start over.

Here's how it goes:

Basement:
DSL modem->BEFW11S4(wired/wireless router)->step-father's PC

2nd Floor:
WAP11 (Access point)->BEFSR41 (router)->my pc

when I connect the AP to the W/ router at the LAN port I get nothing, no link lights nada, that's using reg cat5e cable that came w/ the AP. If I connect the AP to the WAN w/ a x-over cable I get link lights.

The AP manual give's me no direction on what port on the back of the router to plug into??? fawkin linksys

So now what am I to do?

the ethernet cable coming out of the ap should be pulgged into the one of the ports in the router (1-4).

however you will need to find out what's the default ip the ap is set to then change the IP of your system to the same ip range.

it's probably 192.168.x.x
check the manual for that, then i would set the IP for the AP to use the DHCP.

to make things easy plug your system directly into the same router as what the ap is plugged into.

wait a sec? are you trying to get the wireless router and the wireless access point to talk to each other? i'm not sure you can do that. you might look into a wireless repeater. i know linksys has something like that

I'm guessing you're using the access point to get the signal from the wireless router in the basement to the wired router in your room and then to your PC.
The access point should be hooked up the WAN port on the router. Then configure the access point to get it's signal from the router downstairs (channel, SSID, WEP, etc..) and have the router set to obtain IP automatically ('cause your downstairs router connected to the DSL modem should already be taking care of the PPoE crap).

Wouldn't it have just been easier to get a wireless PCI card for your PC and hook the access point to that?

I'm trying to get internet access upstairs by linking the acces point w/ the router. The access point I have is the newest version and is also a wireless repeater. How should I configure it to do what I want?

and like clickwr said, try it when they're close first and see if it works...then take it far away...then you'll know if it's just a distance problem.
