Default ls vtec?

ok so ive been doing alot of looking and asking and it seems everyone is against the ls vtec. and with the price of a b18c1 im wondering if it would be better to get a b16a and build that.

im looking to spend around 4000 and the price of the b18c would be streching that. so what do you think the benifits of getting a b16 and building it if there are any benifits. and what type of prices am i going to be looking at for the built b16.

I say go lsvtec. There is no stock b-series motor that can match the torque and power output of an lsvtec built entirely from OEM parts (excluding fasteners). Since you've decided to build anyway, I see no reason why you shouldn't... its cheaper and more powerful than building a b16a. Assuming youre careful and competent, theres nothing inherently unreliable about it.

:edit: If you would like me to elaborate, just ask  (or do a search in my name on the topic of lsvtec)

Yes there is. Start with a B18C1 or C5, use an "LS" B18A/B crank and rod set. Same as an LS/VTEC hybrid, except there are no external oil lines, but there are oil squirters and a stock crank girdle. I'd still recommend aftermarket or shot peened stock rods.

I meant no stock motor, i.e. lsvtec w/ b16a or b16b pistons > stock b18c5, but yes, you are right.

The only treatment i'd recomend is shot-peening the rods, as kai mentioned, and arp (or equivalent/better) rod bolts and head studs. tcr03, there was a good thread on this a while back in the integra forum... do a search in integra in my name or ISP_James.

An LS/VTEC is a very fluid engine though, you can build one with a wide variety of parts. An LS/VTEC with stock B18B pistons and a B18C crank/rod set won't perform nearly as well as a stock B18C5... it all depends on your part choice and how you assemble it.

Exactly, hence:

i found out that the shop building the ls vtec for me is going to use the pistons and rods from a gsr. and a b16 head. will this be a good setup.

well if he's using a gsr crank, then he just built you a gsr motor, only with lower compression (due to the increased combustion chamber volume of the B16 head). In which case, what you got was a gsr motor sans oil squirters and girdle. The whole benefit of the lsvtec is the LS crank's longer stroke... thats what makes the power that lsvtecs are popular for.
