I say go lsvtec. There is no stock b-series motor that can match the torque and power output of an lsvtec built entirely from OEM parts (excluding fasteners). Since you've decided to build anyway, I see no reason why you shouldn't... its cheaper and more powerful than building a b16a. Assuming youre careful and competent, theres nothing inherently unreliable about it.
