Decisions, decisions...
I agree with everyone else. Get the swap. I know 2 people that have died on street bikes, and everyone I know that rides has wrecked or laid down their bikes at least once.
One of the guys that died just happend 2 months ago. He worked at my work, and he road his bike 15 miles to work everyday. Nicest guy you could ever meet. One night, on his way to work, a little old lady pulled out in front of him and he nailed her. He was doing 40mph and was wearing his helmet....and he died.
The other person I know was a friends friend. He was riding beside a big rig, the diesel cut into his lane forcing him into the opposing traffic and a car going the other way clipped his tire and both people flew off the bike. His girlfriend slid and got a bunch of roadrash but she was ok. She was wearing his helmet. He slid under the truck and his head got run over by the truck. He was pronounced DOA.
It was on the news and everything.
I'm not saying bikes arent fun, because I used to ride a 87 yamaha yzf750. I loved bikes and was saving money to get an R6. But there is no way I will ride a bike everyday. I want to get something that I can just take out once in a while. If you do get a bike, just be careful man. Seriously.

bikes are a lot less practical...and like de.fused and others pointed out, your a lot more vulnerable than in a car (obviously). And if your college is anything like mine you cant get a parking spot until your sophomore or junior year from the college. And it has to be a garage spot (or buy a cover). I was in your spot last year. I picked a bike, a 2000 VF800 interceptor....yellow....i'm still paying it off, and i wish i would have gotten a swap. I park it on the street usually, unti one day i went in for the night, and the next morning i found it laying on its side, somebody hit it
h: Given the decision again i would have chosen a swap (or a faster car).
Edit: just one tip, if you do decide to get the bike, don't go any bigger than a 600.

swap... I think young people should only drive free-standing vehicles. :db:
If you do decide to get a bike, don't get anything over 600cc for your first one... even if you've ridden a while on other peoples bikes. Its easy to get in way over your head in a powerful bike, and heck, even the 600s are making tons of power these days. Drive a 600 for a year (regularly, not just once/twice a month) and when it starts to feel slow to you (which it shouldn't anyway) THEN upgrade. I've known a few people who went out and got themselves a powerful bike thinking it was really cool, and ended up nearly killing themselves.
:edit: and keep in mind (like defused mentioned) almost everybody drops their bike at one point or another.... I've dropped my old one twice, and I wasn't even trying anything wild. My brother had to drop his in order to avoid an accident... so you might consider gettin an older beater for your first bike.
Of course, the whole point of this rambling, is that you're better off swapping :exnbp:
