If you do decide to get a bike, don't get anything over 600cc for your first one... even if you've ridden a while on other peoples bikes. Its easy to get in way over your head in a powerful bike, and heck, even the 600s are making tons of power these days. Drive a 600 for a year (regularly, not just once/twice a month) and when it starts to feel slow to you (which it shouldn't anyway) THEN upgrade. I've known a few people who went out and got themselves a powerful bike thinking it was really cool, and ended up nearly killing themselves.
:edit: and keep in mind (like defused mentioned) almost everybody drops their bike at one point or another.... I've dropped my old one twice, and I wasn't even trying anything wild. My brother had to drop his in order to avoid an accident... so you might consider gettin an older beater for your first bike.
Of course, the whole point of this rambling, is that you're better off swapping :exnbp:
