When do you need alignment?
you'll be able to tell when you need an alignment by looking at your tires. if you get uneven wear on either the outside or inside shoulder, that's a tell tale sign that it's time to take it in for an alignment. another sign is when your tires are cupping or feathering. in that case, you're probably gonna have a problem wit your shocks or struts also.

Actually I recommend once a year. Even if the car is going straight or not pulling to one side. I actually get an alignment 3-4 times a year since I autocross so much and it puts a strain on the suspension. PLUS I raise and lower the car for winter/summer.

I get an allignment:
once at the beginning of summer (for autox season)
once at the end of summer (for winter driving--raised hight)
whenever I do any suspension work, since that tends to screw up your allignment.
Checking tire wear isn't big for me because my tires wear wierd anyway ( I run 2.5- camber f/ 1.5r in the summer), plus I do susp. work often enough that I get allingments faster than the tires wear. For a normal car though, checking tire wear is the best indicator.

on hondas i believe the only thing that can be corrected with an alignment is toe. i just got mine and my camber is messed up and caster too, but caster cant be fixed on my civic. camber can with a camber kit, and the toe can be fixed with the alignment. toe in or out will cause rapid tire wear and will produce bump steering, where ur steering wheel jerks when going over bumps. if your steering is all over the road, then you should get an alignment.
