My brother and I also took out the upstairs wood stove, which made the living room a gajillion times more spacious and practical. I gave the stove to one of my clients as a closing gift, tax writeoff ftw. No destruction photos (it was quite a mess). But here's a before and after:
before
after
You can see from the bare wood floor where the wood stove was. The whole living room is actually oriented towards the TV with a big sectional couch. We just kept that gray couch where it was because the cat loves it and it keeps her off the rest of the furniture.

Its just wood subfloor painted gray. The previous owner ripped out the old carpet when it got worn out and dirty, and rather than replacing it, just painted the subfloor and called it a day.
Man it's coming along pretty nice
What did you finally decide on for the kitchen?
And are hardwood floors in your future plans for the living room?
Just ordered cabinets this morning. Going with a maple shaker style http://www.cabinetstogo.com/ic280Col...rodno=Maple*WC I'll be knocking down some walls and re-arranging stuff in the kitchen. I'm moving the fridge over next to the stove, moving the sink under the window (instead of the corner) and the dishwasher between the sink and the back door. Knocking down half of the wall between the dining room and the kitchen to make an island/bar and putting some cabinets there. Work has been slow lately and Brandy just got a big bonus and tax return, so I figure I'm going to work on the kitchen myself while work is slow and save some $$$ by not hiring anybody (except I will definitely need an electrician).
I originally wanted tile in the kitchen, but with the floorplan being opened up, I think it would look best with wood all around, so that's the plan. That probably wont happen for a while though since we'll probably end up spending around $6k in the kitchen and I don't get regular paychecks The good news is that we finally rented out Brandy's condo, so we should have a little more pocket change in the coming year
Lookin' good dave. The closet looks very professional, and while that stove had a lot of character the living room is way more functional without it. Post pics of the updated bathroom too!
I need to take some photos of the updates to my place too...
