in the case of AF-S nikkor glass the s does not stand for stability, it stands for servo. auto focus servo. since the d40 and the cam jae is looking at does not have a built af motor. he will need to get more af-s glass so it will auto focus. he can still use af glass just need to manually focus it.

It's not that the D3000 doesn't have AF, it just doesn't have an autofocus motor built in to the body itself. Originally Nikon started out doing AF where the lenses had no motor and the body had a little screwdriver thing that powered the focusing. They've since gone to in-lens motors which they call AF-S. The lower end cameras no longer include the body AF motor so they can't autofocus the older lenses that don't have motors.
Ever try to shoot a whale watching trip? Yeah...good luck switching to the 18-55 when all the sudden a whale/dolphin/etc pop up in front of the boat 10 feet from the bow and by the time you have switched to the 18-55 the whale is long gone...:slap: With the 18-200...oh look I can just zoom to 18 and I can get the whole whale and not a small portion of it.

depends on your personality... go in and try/demo them both.
Nikon is geared towards the elegant. simple, good menu's, intuitive...
Cannon is geared towards the engineer. lots of things to play and tinker with..
kinda like Mac vs. PC ... except that both Nikon and Cannon are equally amazing at what they do.

dont think so
canon isnt complicated to me
all cameras have a learning curve
but for a total newbie to the dslr scene 2-3 years ago...Canon wasnt that hard to learn
i'd say go for that xsi deal
sell the zoom lense and get a faster prime lense
