in the case of AF-S nikkor glass the s does not stand for stability, it stands for servo. auto focus servo. since the d40 and the cam jae is looking at does not have a built af motor. he will need to get more af-s glass so it will auto focus. he can still use af glass just need to manually focus it.
A camera without built in AF??? well I guess I haven't kept up then because that seems archaic anymore.
