Default DSLR Suggestion

So i'll be purchasing a DSLR either this weekend or next weekend. Here are my 2 options.

Canon Rebel XS Kit + Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Zoom Lens - $669.98
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+Di...99119000050020

or

Nikon D3000 Kit + Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom Lens - $649.98
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Nikon+D3...99119000050030

I'm going to use this for alot of things like family events and so forth. I'm a noob when it comes to DSLR's so I want something that is going to be right in the hands of a noob.

So what chall folks think?

Comparable cameras so pick the one that fits your hand best and the controls are most intuitive for you.

Here's a question, I know the D3000 doesnt have the AF drive built into it so in order to get AF i'd have to buy a AF lens. I keep seeing lenses that have AF-S in them. Does that mean they have the AF drive in them?

Yup. If you can I would try to swap for the VR lenses. And also...I wish that I had the 18-200mm lens for my d40 as when I am on trips I am always switching back and forth, back and forth...a little annoying.

Honestly, they are both great cameras and I would spend some money taking some classes...then after the class you are probably going to want to upgrade your camera...I for one would LOVE the d90.

AF-S is auto focus with stability

All lenses offered now are AF lenses unless you are dealing with much older used lenses for like say a Konica F3 or the like. Anything that works on these cameras are going to be AF unless otherwise stated (a few specialty lenses you probably will never use or look at)

in the case of AF-S nikkor glass the s does not stand for stability, it stands for servo. auto focus servo. since the d40 and the cam jae is looking at does not have a built af motor. he will need to get more af-s glass so it will auto focus. he can still use af glass just need to manually focus it.

get a point and shoot if your going to complain about switching back and forth from different lenses. another reason not everyone should have a dslr
