All lenses offered now are AF lenses unless you are dealing with much older used lenses for like say a Konica F3 or the like. Anything that works on these cameras are going to be AF unless otherwise stated (a few specialty lenses you probably will never use or look at)
in the case of AF-S nikkor glass the s does not stand for stability, it stands for servo. auto focus servo. since the d40 and the cam jae is looking at does not have a built af motor. he will need to get more af-s glass so it will auto focus. he can still use af glass just need to manually focus it.
