Tactically speaking racking a shotgun has some intimidation but it also can be a huge mistake in letting them know you are coming and where from whether they can see you or not
I do have a large house. Also have a dog downstairs by the door and the bedrooms are upstairs with an overlooking balcony that can't be seen through looking up and a high vantage point all the way around the stairs. I'd know somebody was there and be locked on them LONG before they could even know where in the house I was or IF anyone was home.

So you are the exception and your recomendations would not work for the better majority of homeowners

to add to that, in a smaller, single story house, I entirely see your points. It would be much more of a tactical, far enough away to not be taken with a 'freeze' and an aimed shot.

It ain't a fuckin warzone, it's some d-bag breaking in to steal your TV and pawn it for crack money.

i like my setup ...

one entry into building with a breachers worst nightmare ... one long corrider to travel down with no protection. they can come in but it turns into a defenders dream when he comes down that hallway

right, that was my point earlier. If i lived in a bad area (or Bosnia), it would be much different of an approach.

When someone breaks into your house you learn quickly that it is indeed a warzone from that point forward.

Once the intruder is neutralized it becomes a house again.

Yeah but your logic is equally as flawed. You say that XS's idea is rarely valid unless it's a big house. Well your idea is rarely valid unless it's someone breaking in directly to kill you... and does that happen even a large minority of the time? Uh, no.

I figured the pump would just scare most people off, I would figure it would scare off the majority invaders. how many thugs would think to come after someone after they pump? but per your arguments it does make sense since there is a small percentage that would use that pump aginst you.

I hope I'd never have the situation, but its good to know about these situations just in case. great info guys.
