Tactically speaking racking a shotgun has some intimidation but it also can be a huge mistake in letting them know you are coming and where from whether they can see you or not
I do have a large house. Also have a dog downstairs by the door and the bedrooms are upstairs with an overlooking balcony that can't be seen through looking up and a high vantage point all the way around the stairs. I'd know somebody was there and be locked on them LONG before they could even know where in the house I was or IF anyone was home.
