It was 26.5 when I was drafted (last draft into the Marine Corps) in 1970 and I don't think that has changed. If they do reinstate a draft I think women in the age group should also be required to sign up. No educational deferments either. Maybe even make it mandatory like it is in Israel, everyone serves at least 18 months.

Actually it makes for a more diversified military, granted most of the draftees wouldn't stay in past their required time. (2 years) If they want to do something that has a lot of training then they would have to serve for 2 years beyond the technical training, that way they don't go in and just spend all their time in schooling and only have 6 months left at the end of their school. My GI bill just gave me a set amount of dollars to use towards school as I saw fit when I got out. It was the equivalent of 1 or 1.5 months of benefit for every month of service I don't remember it's been so long. My test scores qualified me to go to the Naval Academy, which I had already turned down in my senior year in high school so I didn't do that in boot camp, and I also was asked to go to OCS (Officer Candidate School) which I turned down. The Academy required 6 years after graduation, and OCS required two years after completion, (school lasted about 3-4 months at that time) about enough time to 1st Lt. Had I gone I would probably be retired now as a Colonel, but it was not the life for me. I watched my Old Man live his life by the Air Force for 30 years. I was a service kid, lived on the bases in a lot of places and lived out on the economy as well, but I never made a lot of friends. I still don't.

noone is giving up their freedom ... from 18 to almost 20 you would be expected to serve in your country ... 3 months of which would be training ... whip ur ass into shape ... then say 12 months of serving in the armed forces. it would do alot for the worthless punks who dont have any respect or direction.

for the majority of kids today it would be a good thing

I'm pretty sure that you cant. I wasn't serious i was just stating that serving in the armed forces for a certain period of time is a severely retarded idea IMO.

Edit: I dont agree with the idea of having people potentially give there lives forcefully. It's one thing to make that choice on your own accord, but security wise it isn't something we need. The only places that have mandatory services is Israel, South Korea, Greece, Algeria, Hungary, Germany, Croatia, Armenia, Switzerland, Turkey, Taiwan, Chile and Nicaragua. A look at the list includes several countries whose very existence is threatened by an unfriendly nation that borders their land.

Canada doesn't need a huge NAVY deployed with Cruisiers and Carriers and Gunships ready at a moments notice all over the world.
