So lately I've been thinking............

Didnt like the shift work? Why didnt you follow through
To be honest, I saw the cliques in the dept. and didn't want to be a part of all that. Plus, I saw that cops only really hung out with other cops, and egos were pretty big. When I inquired about going to the FBI, I found that a degree in law got you up the ladder faster, and I knew I wasn't going to law school.
I worked for a sheriff's department for 2 years in Florida and just left there in January. I'm now in California going through the testing process again. Each agency is a little different but typically you submit your application and then they invite you to take their version of the written test. In FL it was done by computer. In CA it was a multiple choice test with a fill in the blank at the end. In 2-4 weeks they come back with your test scores and invite you to take the PAT. After that you'll usually undergo the background investigation and then take the psychological exam, polygraph, and medical examination. In FL it took me about 8-10 weeks total from date of app to appointment. I applied to 2 agencies here in CA in February and I'm in the middle of processing with both. Takes a lot longer here because of the amount of competition. I think I'm looking at an academy offer in October or so if everything keeps going smoothly. But yea pay and benefits are great. A lot of people don't like officers/deputies but its because of the ones they've encountered or they're looking for someone to blame for their fuck ups. I always treat the person I'm dealing with with respect and I usually get it back. You always get the occasional asshole but thats the way it is. If you have any other questions feel free to ask

LOL yea i know, glad the test wasn't even more south at their headquarters in Trenton.

Thanks man.

Problem is finding someone to hire you. :chuckles:

I was considering to go to school part time once i'm in. They'll pay for school and with a degree, like you said, i'll be able to move up alot quicker.
hfawk:A degree will help you period but they will want to know what you have done to prepare for this career. If a criminal justice degree is it then you're on a good path. I have a business degree but its about how you word your past experience to make it relevant to your pursuit of a career in law enforcement. Most agencies will give you incentive money for having a degree. I received incentive money at my last agency and hope to again. That way they can pay off my student load

Definitely man. A degree is a degree to them. In your interview emphasize the work you put into getting your degree and working with other people and any other ways you can tie it to law enforcement. It'd be a good idea to go online and see if they have practice tests online for you to take. I went to the CA website and found them so I knew what I'd be seeing before I took them. Usually you will be ranked throughout the process so the higher you can place yourself, the better. I'm ranked in the top 20 in both of agencies I applied to so barring anything unforseen I have decent chances of getting picked up. The higher you place after the written tests will dictate how soon they call you to continue the process.

I'm not mad a cops, nor do I wish the good ones any harm. I just knew that if my heart wasn't in it, I had no business making it my career.
