I want a 90 gallon so bad. I know a guy that has live austrailian coral reef in his 90 gallon...20+ fish and at least 10 chunks of live coral reef. Illegal but he had a great connection that smuggled them in safely. It's a beautiful octagon tank with the full works....he never touches it. So jealous

20 gallon tank, but instead of rocks, i did an industrial tank w/ PVC and Clay pots to hide in....therefore the tank isn't cluttered. I also got them as tiny babies.

The problem is that they're stunted. This isn't healthy and humane for the fish, but whatever.

its entirely humain. they are still tiny. Also, this species doesn't get huge (see the zebra one in the pics above)....they will be healthy and grow to about 3-4" within the next year, and at that point, a larger aquarium will be setup.

see this quote:
5) Cichlids are too big and messy for smaller tanks.
Yes, many Cichlids are large. Yes, many Cichlids generate a lot of waste. Also true that many Cichlids are either too aggressive or too active for smaller tanks.
Luckily, Cichlids come in all shapes, sizes, and temperaments. Many Cichlid keepers end up with large tanks for their fish because it allows greater flexibility and variety, but there are a few Cichlids that can do well in more conservative quarters.
If you have a tank less than 55 gallons, do not despair! Some soft-water dwarf Cichlids can be kept in tanks as small as 10 gallons if the tank is set up and stocked properly. There are small shell-dwelling African Cichlids that can also be kept in small tanks. African Mbuna can be kept in tanks as small as 30 gallons if chosen *very* carefully for temperament. "

Basically, the cheap cichlids are the smaller ones. unless you pay for the more expensive rare ones, you are fine!

I believe some of it, but thats why I made sure we went w/ the smaller ones, and we also gambled on a few deaths. I'm new to the Cichlids myself, so i'm relying on research on the net, and consensus w/ what petstores say.

I love the more expensive, more colorful fish, but I didn't want to pay $10+ a fish when i'm learning the new breed, and I don't have the space for the 100 gal tank we want yet.

I like my 30 cuuube. I need to buy the stand for it though, since the current stand isn't very floor-friendly.
