All the ref's are anal like that. They even check to make sure you have the correct ECU. Everything is by the book. As for pre '75 cars, I don't think there are any restrictions smog wise. They do require working mufflers like normal cars because of noise restrictions, but no smog equipment or carb legal parts. The ref I went to said he would never pass a ZC motor, said they are pretty dirty emissions wise. :dunno:

Doesn't make much sense.

"found a way" meaning found a loophole in the system?

No loophole, just found ways to make modifications so that the engine would pass. I should've asked him when I had the chance...He moved to another station about 5 months ago.

Hmmm. Interesting. I wouldn't have guessed that the ZCs would be unusually dirty. But that might explain why Honda didn't put them in the USDM cars, no?

edit: nm. I've heard Japanese smog laws are worse than ours.

Yeah very strict, after 50k miles, you have to pull engine out and put new one in or you get a new car. But then I wonder how people own older cars in Japan. I wonder how that works.

Actually believe it or not, but some referees view the smog book laws as just guidelines to help them do their job. Some believe in smogging jdm engines and some do not smog jdm engines at all. You just need to find the right one. Like some referees will not even smog a b16a just because it is jdm.

it's easy in japan to have less than 50K miles on the original engine. simply they do not use the car as much.

I know people who has put 20K miles on their car in the past 10 years.
