Yeah very strict, after 50k miles, you have to pull engine out and put new one in or you get a new car. But then I wonder how people own older cars in Japan. I wonder how that works.
Actually believe it or not, but some referees view the smog book laws as just guidelines to help them do their job. Some believe in smogging jdm engines and some do not smog jdm engines at all. You just need to find the right one. Like some referees will not even smog a b16a just because it is jdm.
