I believe that it would be much more helpful if we look at the causes of the Muslim world's hate towards the west. Looking throughout history, we have continued to screw the Middle East time and time again after the Ottoman Empire fell. In the end, it is OUR fault that the Middle East is in the condition it is in now.

In addition, it would be worthwhile to examine what would happen AFTER we invade Iran. The leaders of Iran have popular backing. People love them. Imagine occupying a country in which nearly everyone in it wants us dead. Maybe MacArthur could pull it off, but the current administration surely could not. Furthermore, Islam does not exactly support democracy. People WANT religion in government. As we have also seen throughout history, religion and state do not mix well.

It is not a question of appeasement. It is simply a matter of not invading countries that do not like us.

Not quite. The reason that Germans hated the other European countries is because Germany was forced to pay for the rebuilding of not only itself, but of every other European nation as well (not to mention they had one of the highest casualty rates in WWI). While the US had a huge boom in 20's, the German people suffered severe depression. Which is why, after WWII, rather than making Germany pay reparations, the United States actually shelled out its own cash to rebuild Germany instead of making Germany pay reparations. The point: hard handedness can often backfire, and sometimes restraint is the way to win.
