Default Odyssey engine surging

Hello,

I'm new here, but I have a question about the Odyssey.

I have an '03, and when I'm travelling at about 45mph the engine gently surges. The tach needle bounces approximately 200 rpm every 2 or 3 seconds.

The engine will do this when in park but not consistently. The dealer said it was the alternator full-fielding as directed by the engine control computer. He also said "as long as the check engine light doesn't come on we can't help you". This sounds like some advice to the mechanically challenged, not to someone who notices subtle changes in their vehicle and wants to correct them before they turn into a $2500 dollar repair.

Any ideas will be apprectiated!!

Sounds like you have an EGR valve that is acting up. Honda actually issud an extension for 8/80 covering the EGR valve. Bacially your symptoms are exactlly what it does when its bad. I tried to attached the actuall S/B to the postbut its to big. You may have gotten a post card from Honda telling you about the extension also.

Thanks for the tip on the EGR valve!!

I took a look for the power steering sensor. I followed the hose from the PS pump back over the engine to a Y shaped fitting with a greenish sensor in it. Is this the gray electrical connector you are referring to??

Default Dealer update

Local dealer says only certain VIN's are covered under the 8/80 EGR warranty. If your VIN is not covered, sorry about your luck. Looks like I will have to foot the bill for this one myself.

you need to clean the EGR ports in the intake manifold. buy a helms manual and do it yourself, it'll take a couple hours for a beginner.

Well here is the Vin ranges copied exactly from the bulletin

2003 Odyssey – From VIN 2HKRL18..3H500001 thru 2HKRL18..3H504511
and from VIN 5FNRL18..3B000001 thru 5FNRL18..3B067057

Atleast now you can check it yourself. If your over 80k i would say just buy the EGR valve and put it in yourself. Its really easy that your referring to is on the pressure line that goes to the rack. If you follow the line off the pump ( the one that is bolted to it not clamped) it runs down the back of the motor and there is a sensor with a gray 2 pin connector. Were the wires go into the connector is where it breaks. However when that happens you get a surge at a stop. Basically the tach hunts up and down. But your experiancing it at highway speeds and that is typical of an EGR valve. The range is from 40-60 mph when it acts up.

Anyway the P/S switch connector

That was for the older Oddy. 99-00 the newer ones already had a fix so the holes in the manifold were bigger. therefore no need to drill out anything
