From what I've heard, even if you drill out the EGR ports on a J30A1 and do the "fix" the problem still reoccurs. So it's worth a shot, especially since it costs nothing to check/clean.

 

My 2002 Odyssey (57,000 miles) just started engine speed surging while at a stop. The check engine light came on as well. I noticed that it was less pronounced after the engine was warmed-up. Not sure if this is a problem with the EGR valve or something else (Idle control valve?). Has anyone else had this problem?

I do not have a diagnostic tool to get the code.

 

Found out that the cause of my particular problem of the engine surging with the check engine light on was a faulty/clogged Idle Air Control Valve. The diagnostic code was P0505 (per the dealer). They replaced it and all is good.
