Default 5th gear grind at high RPMs

If I'm traveling at 75mph and drop it down to 4th gear and then into 5th I get this annoying grind when I'm pushing from 4th gear into 5th gear. It does not happen at lower RPMs, only at higher RPMs.

What's going on here? I have a 1998 GS-R with 50K miles. I swear, I'm gonna be livid if it's the clutch already.

Thanks.

depends on your driving style, and how much you abuse the clutch/transmission. If all the gears are rough on engagement then yes you mave have a clutch situation on your hands. However grinding a single gear consistantly isn't really an indicator of a failing clutch more of an internal transmission problem. If you're "racing" and dropping from 5th down to 3rd or 4th alot then you may have abused synchro's a bit to much for that gear set. Don't tell me it can't be done because I know of a certain person who has bought an ITR swapped EK hatch and within the 3rd week of owning it he had torn out 3rd gear for the most part.

I've got the habit of rev matching and "heel-toe shifting" on down shifts which makes things easier on the transmission. But to each his own.

I've been known to drop down a gear or two on the highway below 80mph. Actually I'm going to try GM Synchromesh (tranny fluid) since it's received more than a few rave reviews on HAN and H-T. HOPEFULLY that will clear up this minor problem. When I'm normally driving, no problems, it's only when I downshift above 75mph and then put it back into 5th that I notice the grind.

heel-toe, thats a drifting technique. honestly dont try the trickey shit until you can match RPMS with your gears without using the brake.

Bleh, one of my CRX's had a big time failing clutch and I had to rev-match all the time just to down shift. I learned to heel-toe a CRX pretty well because of that fact. It's not really a "drift" technique, just the proper was to enter a corner hot on the throttle without have taking your foot of the gas to brake and clutch.
