DIY: Transmission Rebuild (89pics!)
Fathergoat,
Great writeup, I pulled my tranny out of my 91 honda accord because it is stuck in 5th gear. I could not move shifter lever out of 5th gear. It was stuck. I was driving and it just locked up while going around 50 miles hour. A guy tried to move me out of the road but couldn't move it. The roll back had a hard time getting in my driveway. I was told it may be the clutch throw out bearing. I don't think that it is that. The shift level on the tranny do not move. Please tell me what you think. I have not pulled the tranny apart to see what is wrong with it. I will do it soon. I just need to know what I am looking for. Thanks.

It does sound like the clutch won't disengage. I would start by checking the clutch master and slave cylinders for leaks. If there is a leak then it needs replaced. There's also the shift linkage to look at. The next place to look would be the throwout bearing and pressure plate, which requires you to take the transmission off. The pressure plate might have bent fingers or the throwout bearing could have been dislodged. At this point you would have the transmission off so could try shifting it directly. The last think to look at if you can't move it by hand is to crack it open and look for a broken shift fork.
Honestly I'm betting on a bad pressure plate. The fingers can bend enough to keep it from disengaging but still feel like it's working. It seems to be pretty rare to break a shift fork and that usually takes a lot of abuse to do.

Thanks fathergoat for the quick response.
I have changed the slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder awhile back. I broke a timing belt in 2008 and got the engine and clutch replaced then. I don't know if it is the clutch or the transmission. Someone asked me could I move the shift lever. The answer to that is no. I can not move it. As for the clutch, it looked okay. Of course, I have not pulled it off yet to check the pressure plate. Throw out bearing looked okay. Was still connected. I have to say that before it went out. I did hear a noise that sounded like the cv boot was going out and I couldn't put the car in second without grinding. I just never got around to checking see what it really was. I just want to make sure that I am doing everything okay. Don't want to put it back in and then find out it was something else.

It sounds like you're on the right track. If you have the transmission out I'd crack it open and look for shiny bits(shavings). It's probably going to be one of those things where you just won't know until you look inside.
hello fathergoat,
I tried to pull the tranny apart. The part I am stuck on is the countershaft will not fall after I separated the c-clip. Everything in the tranny is ceased. Nothing will move. I am thinking that I broke a shiftfork. The tranny that I have is the H2U5 model out of a 91 honda accord. Please assist.

I'm honestly not too sure what to do. I guess I would try get someone to make damn sure that snap ring/c-clip is out while you put some pressure on it to separate. You're transmission might be a little different than mine so make sure all the bolts and clips are out that need to be. You might also try tapping it with a hammer in the area where it's binding. Not a full swing or anything just a gentle tap to hopefully break loose any debris that might be interfering.
If I was in your shoes and all that didn't work and I was sure all of the bolts/clips were out I would resort to brute force. I would be careful to not damage the edges of the housing where it seals or the shafts and pry it apart. I'm not going to recommend that though because that is a last resort and pretty much guarantees you will be replacing a lot of parts and could in render the transmission unusable.
Instead I'm going to suggest continuing to look it over for anything holding it together and gently trying to separate it. Take a break every now and then possibly leave it alone for a day or two if need be. Often times the solution will jump out at you. Remember slow and steady wins the race.

Hello Fathergoat,
I can not get the shaft to fall after opening the snap ring. I know it is a broken fork because two of the forks move and one does not. I guess that is why the gearshift was stuck in gear. Now I can't get the casing apart because the shaft will not fall. Is there a reason for this?
