1998 Accord Transmission Problems
The ability to have your car serviced out of warranty is going to be a dealer issue more then a honda issue. Your best bet would be to work with your dealership. If that doesn't work find a friend that has a good relationship with his dealer and see if you can try something with them. I've found honda dealers to be really good or really bad, just my opinion.
Really? My 5speed has had 4 through-out bearing replaced before the dealer finally figure out what they were doing. And now at 44k the pressure plate sqeaks when hot, the dealer said its just starting to wear out that what they sound like so I might need a new cluthc kit before my clutch is done. However, I've only worn out normal wear part early never ruined a permanent part. But 5 speeds have issues too. Since the though-out bearing rides on the pressure plate I'm sure it may have been a contributer to the issue.
Guys, simma down now... That clunk you hear when it is trying to go into reverse is not really a transmission problem. I bought an 89 Honda Accord with 109K miles on it. It had the auto tranny and was making the same clunk in reverse as you guys are describing. It is not a transmission problem it is a shifter linkage adjustment. The shifter is hookied up to some linkage that goes to the transmission. Over time that linkage can fall out of the proper shift range and cause you some problems. I forget exactly how I fixed mine, but I will take some pics of the linkage and the way to adjust it for you guys.
Never fear, BossHogg, your Honda Mechanic is hear....

Acutally you are not alone my friend also has a V6 Accord and he has dropped his transmission like 6-7 times and he is tryin to sell his accord for like 9k. So yeah i think honda ****ed up some transmissons. Report it as a lemon.
Peace,
Tom

I also had the transmission replaced in my 1999 V-6 Accord at 18,000 miles under warranty. When backing out of the garage the transmission would emit a loud clunk after about 20 feet [sometimes]. Both my salesman [who is an ex-service manager] and the dealership service manager told me that a disproportionate percentage of these V-6 AT's require service. Rather than open it up they were advised by factory service to simply replace it. Have had no problem with the replacement transmission.
Have owned 5 Accords and this is the second where I have had trouble with the AT. My '94 LX 4-door required a replacement transmission at about 20,000 miles because it downshifted momentarily into first [rather than second] after making "vigorous"right turns at intersections.
Honda is very good about fixing "out of warranty" items, expecially if the car has been serviced regularly by an authorized dealer and you can provide documentation.

To all you guys with auto's that are having problems I just want to give you a bit of advise. If they are still covered under warranty then by all means goto Honda and have it fixed right away.
For the people that have problems and do not have warranty whatever you do DO NOT ! ! ! take it to an AAMCO or Dr.Nicks or any place that they rebuild transmissions. They will never be able to fix it correctly. The tranny in my old 89 Accord broke and I took it to an AAMCO and after getting it fixed (if thats what you can call it) it always slipped on me and after taking it back to them 6 times for repair (under their warranty) I got fed up and took it to another transmission shop. This was another horror story, after taking it to them 7 times I gave up and did a 5spd swap. So after all was said and done it cost me about $6,500.
You guys have 4 options:
1) Take the car to Level 10 and have them build your transmission (They do excellent work and it will take any abuse you give it)
2) Do a auto to manual swap (you guys with V6's are out of luck on this one)
3) Sell or Trade your car in for a new one
4) Take it to Honda and have them replace the transmission
If you feel that you can't part with your car I would go with anyone of the other suggestions. If you take your car to Honda even though it's out of warranty they replace (not rebuild) your tranny and they give you another 3 year 36,000 mile warranty on that tranny. It will cost you some cash but you will have peace of mind. For about the same money you can have Level 10 rebuild your tranny but for people that are far from New Jersey (I think there is also one on the west coast im not sure though) that will be kind of difficult for you to get done.
Well just some thoughts take them for what they're worth. I had to learn the hard way I hope you guys don't. I hope this helps some.
GoodLuck !

This is why you get the 5-speed 4-cylinder (although my clutch squeals, so I don't have too much to brag about).
Damn throw-out bearings. Getting it replaced next time I go in for an oil change, under warranty (Certified Pre-Owned Warranty, that is).
