Default accord shopping

hey. new here and to the import world. i'm looking to buy a used accord or acura tl for my wife to drive and me to play with. i have some questions about the accords.

how is the 2.7l v-6 for reliability and is it easily upgradeable?

how is the 3.ol v-6 rate for the above question?

or should i just get a v-tech?

i'll be getting one with an auto as my wife refuses to learn to drive a manual. i don't want to build a race car but just enough power to torment my friend in his 03 g35.

any help or links are really appreciated. i'm losing my mind trying to figure out what to do.

ugh  I have no idea what you're asking/what your goal is and I don't think you've done any research yourself. Why are you thinking that an Accord will come anywhere near a G35?

I don't think you will be able to torment your friend and his G35 with any stock Honda, especially an auto.

As for reliability the Honda auto trannies are not very good for 6th gen Accord (1998-2002) as well as the previous gen TL.

i'm not thinking a stock honda will come near a stock g35. never said that. what i am asking is which engine option should i look into? my goal is to get it somewhere in the mid 200's horsepower wise without sacrificing reliability. maybe that's not possible. i don't know. that's why i'm here. i know there's stuff out there for the v-tec. but what's out there for the 2.7l and 3.0l's. is my goal possible? which of the three is my best option? i'm not looking to win any drag races. i can do that in my diesel. i just want to build a car to have a little fun with. and if i can get it close to the g35 even better.

hp80..thanks for the heads up on the trans. i believe i heard they are or were being recalled. i'll have to make a note to ask the original owner if it's been done. thanks again.

You want a different car to be honest. Or a TL/CL Type-S.

The 3.0 V-6 in the 6th gen is a Vtec, as well as the 4 cylinder engines. If you had a 5-speed with it, you might stand a chance. But as said earlier, they are all auto (at least in the 6th gen) but I suppose that is what you are looking for so more power to ya.

thanks for the info guys. i've found a couple used type-s but they seem to be JUST outside our price range. i'd prefer the v-6 accord but it seems like i'd have an easier time upgrading an i-4?? ahhh, who knows what i'll do. i'll probably wind up with the accord v-6 and make the best out of it unless the right acura falls in my lap.

thanks for the info. really appreciate it. been building trucks my whole life so this car thing is like being in a foreign country and without a translator. can't wait to get started though!!

All accord engine/transmission combos prior to the 2003+ V6 6-speed don't really respond well to basic modifications. Either the engine doesn't have the potential (in the case of the I4's), or the tranny can't hold it (in the case of the V6's). You'll be blowing tranny's on Accord V6s frequently if you give it any more than basic bolt ons, guarenteed. And since you don't want a manual, it's probably not a good car to heavily modify IMO.

ahh. yeah i was wondering about the strength of the trans. do they break hard parts or just wear clutches? seems most autos from any manufacturer will only handle about 50 hp over stock. sounds like honda isn't any different. maybe i'll still get her an accord to drive and try and pick up a cheap civic or prelude for me to play with. or integra. atleast then i can get a manual trans for me.

From what I understand, and have heard, the manual is good to go, unless you were to mod it up to something ridiculous of course. It's the automatic that struggles. I'm sure a search will uncover the exact issues. I believe it has something to do with faulty bearings or something related, at least in the 6th gen accords.
