Default Newb Question on ATF change

Hey, I am planning on doing an ATF change on a 1994 accord. I was just wondering how diffucult this will be? Where are the drain plug and filler located on this engine? Also I have heard that it is much better to use honda brand ATF instead of some generic alternative, if this is true is there anywhere else to buy genuine honda ATF other than the honda dealership?? Thank You.

It's literally as easy as changing the oil in your engine, only the trans has no filter. The drain plug is obviously at the bottom. You won't need a socket for it either...the square part of the ratchet will fit right in. To fill it, just pull the dipstick out and use a funnel. Buy 3 quarts of Honda ATF (only at the dealer), and put all three in.

It's also better to change it hot! Just make sure you have a container that can withstand high temperatures such as a metal bucket or something. When I say hot, I don't mean engine temperature. You need to drive the car to warm up the tranny. Go drive around at a decent speed to warm it up. Then put it on ramps and change it asap. This helps get more sediment out of the tranny while hot.

I just changed my tranny fluid this weekend.

$19.77 for 4 quarts of Honda ATF fluid.

Becareful to remove the bolt slowly. It will leak out slowly which is what you want.
Unlike me I removed the bolt to fast and that shit started spraying everywhere on the floor except for the pan I had under the car.

So now I have a huge black/ brown stain on my driveway.
Oh well but the outcome is great. Such smooth shifting....feels like I have a new tranny.........

How can I remove that stain off my driveway?

I'm glad I found this post although as I was looinking to post a question such as this, took me a second to figure out the term ATF. And that is what I really wanted to ask.

I have a `95 Accord LX AT which is just under 125K miles.
Now what I have heard is that it is dangerous and that it should be avoided to change the tranny fluid if your car has around 100k miles. It was said that it would be to your disadvantage and that something horible could happen. Ok I sound too much like J.R.R. Tolkien now.

Anyway, is that true?
My 2nd gear is kickin a little bit would it help to change my ATF?

Thanks a lot guys this forum is of great help. Always!

from everything i have heard and read it is NOT dangerous to change your tranny fluid. I can't say for sure but that sounds a little ridiculous to me. Anyway my follow up question....you say to add 3 quarts?? is that the maximum capacity? I have heard that you can only drain about 2.5 quarts out of the tranny in this gen accord. Also I bought a bottle of gunk transmission conditioner. Its supposed to stop rough shifts and condition seals etc. Is this a good idea in honda trannys. Since i know that you should only use honda ATF i jsut wanted to make sure that this conditioner would be good for the tranny. Thank You.

First....it's NOT dangerous to change your tranny fluid. That's like saying it's dangerous to change engine oil, c'mon! It helps your tranny, it's the most overlooked fluid in a car that's very important and people wonder why their tranny's go bad.

Second...I don't wholeheartedly believe that all honda trannys have the same ATF capacity. Check with the dealer when you purchase it(which is the ONLY place you shoudl be purchasing it anyway). I was told 3 quarts for my 00' AV6. I'm due for it again this year.

Honda ATF is the ONLY thing you can use in a Honda Automatic. Anything else may work but it will equal tranny death shortly.

Truthfully, the only trans that they DON'T give us 3 quarts of ATF on...are the Civic Hybrid and the Insight trans...they usually hold more than 3 because they are not like the other transmissions. But be it Odyssey, Accord, regular Civic...V6 or 4cyl...we're given 3 quarts of ATF, so yeah they pretty much all hold the same.
