How Secure is Your Job?
I'm being laid off after thanksgiving. I own a business so I'm not in bad shape, but I feel bad for the other guys. My terminal is laying off a total of 10 employees. Company wide, 5% of our union and non-union employees are being laid off, which is strange, because tonnage/volume/revenue is up for the month of november. That, and the company hasn't posted a monthly loss since last year.
I'm a contractor for the Air Force and right now the contract that I've been working on was recently rebid and won by General Dynamics. So, as of 1 January I will no longer be working for my current company. Even though I'm a incumbent GD is not required to keep me on. So my job, as of right now, is up in the air. It really sucks not knowing what my employment status is going to be as I'm the sole provider for my family. I make a decent amount of money where I'm at right now and there is nothing else comparable pay wise in my area.
somewhat secure, I work for a rental car company as a liason for an insurance company. Although claim volume is down a good amount where I am, I'm viewed as one of the top people in my department so if they do make some cuts it will be to thin the heard of the slackers. Other departments have been hit and they have supposedly stopped the bleeding for now, so I still think I'll be safe for a while. Its a little nerve racking hearing about people getting laid off considering the company has never laid anyone off prior to a few months ago.
It's amazing how much of an impact the Big 3 crisis would have on the rental car industry, if they go under my company won't be able to rent cars to customers bringing their cars in for service. think of how many dealerships are in your general area and then think about how many people bring their cars in for service. People are also holding off on taking their cars into body shops cause they are cashing out, taking the money and not getting the repairs done. That or they can't afford their dectable. Thank god for snow bird season, those cotton heads better crack up a lot of cars this winter out here.
