Any Marines in here?
I have no problem defending our nation.
But I will differ to out signed troops to fight the wars we are under.
My father has two tourers in Iraq. And he is my hero. He joined when joining the military meant defending this country.
If I were to fight a war to defend capitalism and the American way of life. I will be right there in line.
I would die for the life we have made for ourselves. But i will not go to die for the principals of the government.
I know, i'm republican. and this war should be taken with the army we have.
If we are threatened by any nation with the power to do any damage, i would be there.

I dont care if anybody agrees with the war or dissagrees, fact remains because of this great country and its people we are safe and can continue complaining about how shitty it is.
dunno if its been mentioned but stick with engineering and work for a private company over in afghanistan/iraq... that might be your best bet - you'll get to do what you love and make a difference!
Really what i want to do is design and build cars
I was a Marine for 4 years and got out in 05. Did 3 tours in Iraq/Kuwait.
Delayed entry program is a joke and there is no real serious training other than a little drill here and there and maybe they will show you how to disassemble an M16. At least that is how it was for me, it may be different in some places.
I joined because I wanted to prove to everyone that I could actually be someone because I got pushed around a lot in school. When I came home after my first deployment, people treated me like an entirely different person and people that would never even have given me the time of day before were trying to get in good with me. It was a good high for a while. But you do deal with A LOT of bullshit in the corps. If you decide to join, there will be times you will say to yourself "What the fuck did I sign up for?" But you will experience things that you will never forget and it will make you a stronger person for the experience.
You can ask me any questions if you have any.

Marines? I thought he tests the structural integrity of chairs all day...
Make sure it is a respect you deserve and not one of those arrogant A-type better than you bullshit corps soldiers. I respect EVERYTHING our armed forces do. After all I almost signed up for the Corps, but due to health issues I can't. There are those stereotypes of assholes and fuck-faces, but I still respect them for what they are doing in my place.
Whatever you do make sure it is one you want to stick with...dishonorable discharge is a horrid thing. It's a tough road that I wish I could have taken but Unkie Sam said my back issue wouldn't let me.

Marine Corps isn't very big...hence the Few And The Proud. They don't really force deployments either, they deploy on a Volunteer Basis. I'm in the Army Reserves and am pretty content. Part of me wishes I were Active Duty...but part of me is glad I'm not. I can still get deployed like Active, I just don't work full time. If it were me, and you're thinking Reserves of ANYTHING...I'd go Army. To me, there's no point in be a Reservist Marine. I get shit talked to me all the time for doing Army Reserves...I'd hate to see what a part-time Marine would get. So if you want to go Full Active Duty...sure, go Marines. If not, I'd go Army. But either way, get your 4 year Degree first and go in as an Officer. Or go Enlisted for a few years, then go Officer. You'll get more experience and depending on what Rank you are when you go Officer, you can get more money. Just my $.02
