All the more reason IMO to stretch our current level of consumption as far as possible. When the capital cost of conservation is on par with the cleanup cost of a major oil spill, why continue to waste a finite resource?
Remember that tanker that ran into the Bay Bridge piling last winter? That was only a couple thousand gallons of fuel oil; consider what would happen if an 18" main carrying crude burst... :hsugh:
The oil Bush is advocating we tap now will come at a documented risk to our environment and it will take the better part of two years to come to market given the lack of refining capacity.
In the risk versus reward analysis, I see more money going to the oil companies than to the solutions that are staring us in the face right now.
If we go ahead and open up the shorelines, we're hitting the snooze button instead of nutting up and making the tough call.

one thing that we still need to keep in mind is that in the US, the production of electricity is still the #1 consumer of petroleum oil. If we don't look for alternate ways to produce electricity (nuclear, windpower, tidal power, hydro) nothing will matter....
we all try so hard to save mpg in the cars but i dont think enough people are recognizing the need to change our habits in the house...
and with all of that said, if drilling offshore will give us any relief at the pump, however temporary it is, i say go for it.

I disagree wiyth the line of thought that this won't drive us from fossil fuels. I think what this will do is advance it significantly because a large part of current society in America was alive to feel the effects of the "energy crisis" of the 70s.
If anything it will re-open those fears (since we seem to have forgotten the lesson) and force a race to the next fuel. First person to crack it gets a nice parting gift of fame and fortune for the next 60+ years.
I am not so certain it will be electric since the batteries are the least environmentally sound idea ever picked. seriously have you seen the strip mining used to create the batteries? add that to the fact that batteries have a charge life...sooo what happens to the batteries? Yes you can recycle them but the waste that produces is toxic and again poses a new round of questions. I am no enviro-nazi by any stretch of the imagination but I am also a realist about the damage we can do.

actually there are a bunch of nuclear power plants in New England. I can think of 2, one in MA, one in CT, and one in Jersey.
nuclear power is safe. chernobyl and 3 mile island were freak accidnets. i mean chernobyl was BAD. but the communist russians never made anything right, look at the yugo.
the one in mass and ct are closed. something about them not making any money. the one in ct its nuclear rods just sits there still. i believe it hasnt been closed long. its in mystic if i believe. the one in mass yankee power or something i believe all the waste got sent to the desert somewhere.

Like...howdy...it just didn't magically disappear and then appear in your drinking water...
So they'll just be like OMG totally drill that shit, we can live forever. Fuck competing in a global economy. Shut the borders and trade, we want to get paid for 8 hours but only work a grand total of one hour while driving in our huge vehicles and feeding our 4 kids. We're completely capable of making TVs, turquoise jewelry, and Tupperware on our own! We'll show the rest of the world what MADE IN AMERICA really means. errrghhh.
How do these people think we got to where we are? Were we really this inefficient in everything we did? I know we had a lot of oil, and exported it, but at least the workforce wasn't fat and lazy AND we didn't really have anybody else to compete with.
