Remember that tanker that ran into the Bay Bridge piling last winter? That was only a couple thousand gallons of fuel oil; consider what would happen if an 18" main carrying crude burst... :hsugh:
The oil Bush is advocating we tap now will come at a documented risk to our environment and it will take the better part of two years to come to market given the lack of refining capacity.
In the risk versus reward analysis, I see more money going to the oil companies than to the solutions that are staring us in the face right now.
If we go ahead and open up the shorelines, we're hitting the snooze button instead of nutting up and making the tough call.
I'm not looking for price breaks with this, but we are going to run out of oil someday. We are never going to be independent of it. As much as people would like to believe that we are, I don't see how it is possible. Sure, we can cut back, but we will never be totally independent. Nobody says that our consumption habits will get worse if we drill for this oil, but it would be good to have a backup plan when the time comes. Our country and the world will still push for viable alternatives, but what if one never comes to fruition? Then we're fucked 6 ways from Sunday.
