dude, simply tell him, he tried to steal, he got caught, he's paying the price. let it be a lesson. he'll appreciate it when someone decides not to jack his shit, because they learned a similar lesson years back.

If you're both in HS a misdemeanor would be off the record by the time you're out of college easily.
