Shoplifting charge
One of my good friends was caught shoplifting a $19.99 xbox game from Target a few weeks back. He's never been in any sort of trouble before, and he cooperated with everything and didn't give Target nor the police any problems. He just called me up and told me that he got a "Assets Protection Recovery" charge from Target that says "the amount of this demand is $229.99". How on earth can they fine him that much for a 19.99 item. This isn't even the fine from the court, this is from Target. This doesn't seem right.

They factor in the manpower it took and inconvenience fee to security. Besides that added charge serves as a future reference for when the dumbshit decides to not pay for something.

I worked for a small retail store where this guy ran out the store after he stole something and the manager was trying to stop him, and my friend (super skinny 5'5'' girl) chased him into the alley and took him down like she was a pro wrestler. It was sweet.

yeah, it was a total wake-up call to him. The kid had never been in trouble whatsoever. He's never been pulled over, he had never even spoken to a cop until that night. Now he flinches everytime he walks out of a store. I know its not a good way to learn, but at least he did. But still. $229.99 for a 30 minute ordeal? The item was 20 bucks, and it was even returned. How can they charge that?

He will pay it, but he still thinks that its bullshit. He hasn't even gone to court yet, so technically hes not off yet. Any idea of what his punishment will be? No previous record of anything, 18 years old, full cooperation with Target and police officers.

And also, he was telling me that the target manager said that they had their cameras on him from the very start. They described his every movement. Isn't that prejudice and/or illegal? He's not gonna fight that, he just thought that that wasn't legal. It is true that he is a teenager/young adult, but he was just wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, and is clean cut, so there is nothign to really draw the manager to watch him.
