Are you sure? Last time I ran a 50ft CAT5 from my moden to the router...it didnt work. I replaced the cable with a 10ft one and relocated the router closer to the modem. It worked :dunno:

that means you had a bad cable, length dosent have anything to do with it.

if he already has a 50ft cable running now to the computer... it "should" run with the router instead. i have a 50 footer running to one of my computers and i was getting some packet loss. It was probably due to the cable being faulty or just too long and not being able to transmit over the distance. I ended up adding a switch on the other end and its been working fine h:

I agree with going wireless. It will be easier because you can put the computers almost anywhere in the house without running cables. However, each computer will need to have a wireless ethernet card in order to receive the signal. So you would connect the cable modem to the wireless router which will then transmit the internet+network signal to any computers in range. You also usually have the option to hardwire 4 computers to the router if you want to. It is important to use the security options available on the router - aka WPA, WEP encryption so that nobody else but your family can get on and use your internet or your network. If you do not, you'll probably find that your neighbors and anyone driving by can use your internet. Hope this helps.
