simple computer question........
also, CAT5 cable should work with lengths up to 300ft. I've ran 100+ feet without having any problem. And, if you decide you want to wire the house it may be easier to go through the ducts but you'll have to buy special insulated cable for that.
If you do go with wireless make sure you get 802.11g. The g is the faster wireless. Then on the box it will say 11 bps, 54, or 100. You want the highest one possible. It may be alot more money (50-100 bucks) but it will be worth it. You will be able to get faster internet from your wireless. We had 11 for a while and it was slow as hell. Now we have 54. I haven't used it since that but its alot faster.
I perfer wired versus wireless, that way you get the full capability of your internet, not just what the router limits you to.
When you set up your router, make sure you have to have a password(Encrypted wireless) in order to connect to the wireless, otherwise anyone can get onto your internet and possibly cause problems and steal your bandwidth.

All data transmissions, digital or analog, are only as strong as their weakest link.
honestly, just get a wireless router, put it in a central location of your home if you want them in different rooms or in the room next to the one you are using to house the most computers (NOT THE SAME ROOM!) use a wireless G router (the higher data rate allows you to go further away from the router while still maintaining good connection speed) and you are basically set since you can put your modem anywhere you really want as long as there is power and a cable jack.
BUT some cable companies use routers and switches to get you your stuff, and the more computer you have on the router the more you are demanding internet, the more the cable company give you for the time being. all this being an unintentional flaw in the "lets distribute power to where it's needed most" system. IE mrs. grandma isnt hogging up everyones internet when she just checks email once a day.
