That'll rarely work. They'll just find something else to occupy themselves with. I know I always did.

And isn't that pretty much what time-out is? Not letting them do fun stuff for a certain amount of time?

And that's only when they're really little. Once they hit like 4, they have enough stuff that they want to do that parents can prevent them from doing that is usually enough incentive to just do what they're supposed to.

But for the most part I'm more of the mindset to just let kids run free and only steer em in the right direction when needed. You'd be surprised at how smart a kindergartener can be if you give them the chance to show you.

true, not as the first consequence. But as in most other rules, the more you break them, the more serious the consequences become. And there comes a time when you need to put the smack down. As a parent of two beautiful children, I know this.

Cause you're scared to get fired. Why don't you do a donut in front of a cop? Cause you're scared to get a ticket/car towed/beat up(aka Rodney King'd). Why don't you stop paying your rent/mortgage? Cause you're scared that you'll lose your home. Fear keeps us on the straight and narrow.
All I'm going to say is...

you don't cuss your boss out because you get paid to respect your boss. you are rewarded for your work
you don't do a donut infront of a cop because you wouldn't want to protentially kill somebody. values
you don't stop paying your rent or mortgage because you are basically rewarding yourself

It's not fear that should motivate unless in certain situations. Poor comparisons if you can even call them that.

You obviously don't have children or you'd know that this doesn't always work. My son is a gamer for real! His mother has taken away his game in an attempt to get him to straighten up and it doesn't work. I don't need to take anything away from him cause when he's with me he acts right, and if he's doing something he knows he shouldn't be doing, all I have to do is give him a look and he knows to cut it out. I have made my point, he knows what's up, I rarely ever spank him anymore cause he knows if he shows his azz, I'll tap that azz. He dislikes that more than he does not having the game for a few days.

I think you stretched it with that. It's more like VRGNCD5 said.

So what happens, dad, if down the road he's with some friends and they're going to do something bad and you aren't there to scare him?

That's the main problem with this type of treatment--it only works when that person is around.

we all have our own opinons. There have been many times I wanted to cuss out my boss, never once did I stop and think "you know what, I can't do that, I get paid to respect this guy and he rewards me for my work".

One time, my boy and I were riding in his Camaro SS and he was getting ready to whip it when I spotted a cop. He didn't do it. Not cause he thought "oh man, if I do this, somebody might die" because nobody was in that area of the parking lot at the time.

There have been many times when I didn't want to send in that rent check, but did anyways, not because I said "this is my reward to myself", but because I said "screw that, I ain't getting kicked out!"

No I can assure you it is not fear that motivates us. Fear only motivates the stupid and the lazy.
