The "experts" will say your kids shouldn't fear you, and to a point that's true, they shouldn't fear you, they should fear the repurcussions of thier actions. Why don't you cuss your boss out? Cause you're scared to get fired. Why don't you do a donut in front of a cop? Cause you're scared to get a ticket/car towed/beat up(aka Rodney King'd). Why don't you stop paying your rent/mortgage? Cause you're scared that you'll lose your home. Fear keeps us on the straight and narrow.
All I'm going to say is...
you don't cuss your boss out because you get paid to respect your boss. you are rewarded for your work
you don't do a donut infront of a cop because you wouldn't want to protentially kill somebody. values
you don't stop paying your rent or mortgage because you are basically rewarding yourself
It's not fear that should motivate unless in certain situations. Poor comparisons if you can even call them that.
