I wish there was more I could do for you Mandi. Especially with getting your business off the ground. I know what it's like....

Thanks I appreciate the thought.

I called career services today at school and she got back to me tonight with 2 leads in the Harrisburg area (Enola and Mechanicsburg). I'm going to call them tomorrow and see what they're all about and possibly set up an interview. They're both about a 45 minute drive up 83 from my house, according to AAA.com.

I'm also going to go into my old work tomorrow to visit everyone. Don't know if you've heard of it or not, but Brockie Pharmatech. They're an institutional pharmacy and supply some of the nursing homes and assisted living homes in Lancaster, as well as others across the state. I was a billing clerk there and i know at the end of the year they're usually busting ass to get things done and make sure everything is balanced. They might allow me to come in a few hours a day and help with some petty things around there. I know they used to bring in other people, like my boss' daughter and other people who used to work there, to help out. Even if they don't need any help, i can still pass out my business cards and see if they'd want to come get a massage here.

My mom's also buying 3 gift certificates from me for 1 hour massages to give to some people, so that's about $120 right there.

And I called some places in the phone book today to see if they were hiring and while none of them were currently looking to add anyone, they said to come in and fill out an application with my resume. :dunno: At least that'll help get my name out there. One of them is a Bridal Boutique in Hanover..that would be an AWESOME place to work.

So that's the deal right now. I'm going to the mall tomorrow and filling out an application at the Bon-Ton and Boscovs...and i think i'll run over to Park City also.

So we'll see i guess. Wish me luck.

O.K..I think I'm the perfect person to help!! I was in a really similar situation to you not too long ago. I'll tell you my story:

I was a straight A honor student in H.S., but dropped out of college when I realized I didn't know what I wanted to do. Met my hubby and got married really young--20. I had worked retail (Sears) and several other customer service jobs up util then. Became a bank teller and then a jewelry salesperson. Worked in the malls for several years. I told myself--"this is no career. I can't do this forever."

Just about then my Dad was buying a house from Realtor who was someone I went to school with. She was about my age and driving a BMW. My dad mentioned he thought I should look into this. I thought, why not? I went to a local school (you can even do it online, now) and within 6 months, I had my license. I worked as a licensed personal assistant to a developer who also was getting into building houses. I realized this was the direction I wanted to take. I got a new job as a new construction salesperson and I LOVE IT! I have the potential to make 6 figures and expect to be very close to that next year (my first full year.)

Now that you know that, let me tell you about me. I am not a very personable person, but I am genuine and I care about my clients and make them feel like they are #1. I had a very hard time, as you do, getting hired anywhere and I know a lot of times it had a lot to do with my age. I am also a hard person to get to know, but I feel that once you get to know me, I am very likeable. This first impression, though, is hard to break and cost me several jobs. I was flat out age discriminated against in one interview. The beauty of real esate is that you are your own sucess or worst enemy. How well you do is directly related to how hard you work. Residential real estate is very cut throat and expensive to start up, but can be very rewarding. I was very lucky to get into building, where they pay for all start up and even gave me a draw on future commission until I started making sales. Any Realtor will tell you--this is the good life!

Licensed personal assistants also usually make an hourly salary from the Realtor they are assisting and often can sell on their own, as well, and make a commission. This is a good way to "learn the ropes" and still get paid until you are ready to get out on your own. Also, I thought I could sell cars, too. I worked at Honda for ONE day!! They pay sucks, you're outside (in wisconsin freezing your butt off), and the majority of the people who work there are scum. I ran from that quick. Don't sell yourself short, though. I thought I'd never be sucessful at anything until I found new construction. I little bit of confidence goes a very long way. Anyone you're interviewing with will notice that, too. If you don't have confidence, fake it! I faked my confidence to get my current job and it worked! I got some sales and that gave me real confidence. It's very rewarding and I'm making the best money I've ever made.

Sorry for the long story, but I totally saw myself in your posts and had to tell you how I made it work for me. Even if you don't do Real Esate, find something and make it happen for yourself. No one is gonna give you anything unless you make it happen and believe that you can. I'd be happy to talk more (is that possible after this very long post? ) if you would like to PM me. Otherwise, good luck on a new career path!!!! P.S. Believe it or not, I used to be a very negative person. It doesn't get you anywhere. I hope what I said helps even a little.

Wow, thanks!! and Congrats!! Sounds like you're really on your way.

Thanks for the booster. I would never sell myself short, which is why this is getting so frustrating..i feel sometimes that that's the only way to go right now and im so freakin stubborn that i refuse to do so. I'm not givng up on my massage career, though..even though I know i will never make the money that i could doing something else. But i love what i do..its rewarding for me as well as my client and i know how good it is for the body. I love making people feel good.

I'll figure this out soon enough and hopefully land the right job eventually. It's out there, somewhere, i just havent stumbled upon it yet. I'd love to go back to school for some sort of Business Management or something lke that so that i have something else to offer than just my massage skills. We'll see.

But thanks so much for your post and keep up the good work with your new career. I'll definately keep all that in mind.

Oh and, next time, break it up into paragraphs. h: My eyes hurt now :loco:
