Sometimes I ask myself if it's really worth it... If I kept my Civic I'd have it hooked up by now, probably with a D16Z6, saving up for a turbo. I'd have money to buy schoolbooks and go out with friends. I think about selling my car all the time and just getting a beater so that I can save up the $$$.

It's quite a bargain. Dunno how else to explain it. To others, I guess their cars are #1 prorities.
That's pretty much the same situation I'm in. I constantly think about the money I'd be saving if I kept my civic... especially after I got the wreckless driving ticket...

I don't make minimum wage and I work anywhere from 35-45hrs a week. Haven't done any mods to my car, but probably will in the future. I am probably just going to wait awhile before I get to that point and instead, pay the loan down as much as possible.

And to Fuji, you've just moved into your house recently, congrats, but get off your damn high horse already. You act like you're so damn special because you have your own house, it's a great accomplishment, but don't talk down to people like you think you're better.

Every situation is different, a lot of us still at home are still going to school. Every person I have spoken to has told me to stay home to cut down on costs as long as possible, I get along great with my dad, who treats me as an adult. So why am I going to move out, so I can "be a man".. because if you think that's the only thing that makes a man, you're sorely wrong...

There's a decent chance that I'll live with my parents for a period of time after I graduate. I mean obviously it'd be nice to have a house but I'd rather save up enough money to get myself on a solid footing and then go out and start renting a nice apartment while saving up for a house to buy when I'm 30 or so.

My parents had the advantage of getting married while they were both in grad school so they moved in together and promptly got high-paying jobs with their MBAs in the late 1970s, so they pooled their assets and bought a really nice house (i.e. the one they're still living in that's worth about a half million) only 7 years out of school.

Me, I have more of a taste for things like gadgets and cars than my folks ever did plus I don't see myself marrying a chick with an MBA in the next couple of years (but hey ya never know) so I'm placing a more conservative estimate on when I actually settle down and buy a house.

For right now though I'm focusing on getting out of school and onto the job market. If I'm lucky then my folks will give me a car when they graduate, even if it does happen to be my mom's '96 Chrysler Town & Country. Not having to buy a daily driver will leave me with the funds to buy some kind of sports car weekend toy that doesn't necessarily have to run all the time because I'll have the minivan to get around in while the toy *cough* FD *cough* is being worked on.

im 22 and work 45 hours a week. i dont get paid enogh for what i do, but thats a rant for another day.

i live at home still, but since i was 16, ive had to pay for everything, i had to pay back my parents for my Dynasty, have always paid for my insurance, and any mods. Now i have a full time job, it helps, but my bills have increased accordingly.. sadly.

i make mods like a bill

so its:
200/mo for "rent to my parents
456/mo for auto insurance
389/mo for my cruiser payment
42/mo for cell phone
75/ for student loan
i pay my credit card off when i get it, but i dont use it that much, was $80 last month.

I borrowed some cash from my bro to pay for the body shop, and thats another 100/mo

and then its usually about 200-300/mo i spend on my car, if it be mirrors, or spoilers, or gauges, or whatever.

i pretty much break even everymonth with my $$.. and im to a point now, where i would like to start saving for a place to live, but i know as soon as the CRX is done, that will be helpful, and when 2005 hits, and the cruiser is paid off, and when all my stuff is off my insurance record, i will have a lot of money on my side.. but for now.. i just make due, i push to the limit, and go from there.. cause cars are what i love.. so i make it work in my equation

*whew*.. sorry for the long post

i dont talk down because i bought a house, i "talk down" because ive started my family. ive learned theres a hell of a lot more to life to spending money on car parts. ive learned that going out to buy a vacuum cleaner or some can lights for my basement is not such a bad thing. No one ever saved money staying at home with their folks, thats a farce. the sooner you buy the better you are.

I work full time in a very large corporation and make a very good salary. I don't spend much money modding my car, I have very few mods, just a few nice things I wanted to do to it. My car is paid off fully. My undergrad school is paid off. I am two classes away from finishing my MBA and that will be paid off before I am done with my last class. All of these things have been paid for solely by myself. I live at home still and I am 25. I could be out on my own if I wanted to but I would not have all of these things paid off and I would be paying a ton of money on interest. I also pay rent to my parents for living in their home so don't think I am a moocher or anything. I am saving up and already have started a very nice retirement package for the future as well as been saving for a downpayment on a place of my own that I will buy in the future. I think it just all depends on your plans and what is most important to you.

I don't know how the rest of you feel about your families but I love mine very much. They are wonderful. Sure we have our disagreements and and fightes every now and then but it isn't enough for me to justify being in debt and moving out. I help around the house and give my parents a breather when I am able to do things like mow the lawn or cook dinner for everyone. I have my independence because my parents know I am 25 and what I do is my own business.

aw man youre just jealous because of your peers. people are born with different spoons, some aluminum and others platinum. go ahead find yourself a job and start from there, but IMO if youre short on cash please dont push it in and use your hard earned cash to mod.

i get my stuff whenever i have money to afford it. I get about 300 bux every two weeks, but most of it goes to my parents to pay my bills, and i get a good 40 bux a week to live off of for gas and food.

food + gas > parts

I feel ya man, I'm trying to make sure I pay atleast 50% of my tuition before I am out, that way I'm not stuck with a lot of debt.

I also feel ya on the family thing. I've lost a lot of people I've been really close to. The one person that has ALWAYS been there for me is my dad. He is the person I am the closest to, likewise for him as well. We get along very well and rely on eachother for support. I do get the itch to move out sometimes, but then a lot of my friends say that I have a pretty decent situation at home. It's not really like living with parents. My dad and I talk like adults, plus he spends a lot of his weekends up in L.A. with his gf, so I basically have the house to myself on the weekend, which is nice.
