Make the first coat of paint a light mist, nozzle about 24 inches from the surface you're spraying. This helps the paint stick better. Also if the humidity is high, like its raining outside, this helps keep the dust down. Also you might want another coat of color paint to cover the car. It might still be letting some of the primer color through.

Not true, what helps the paint stick is preperation. Hold the spray gun about 8-12 inches from the surface, not 24. But do go light on the coats, if you try to cover it all on the first coat, you'll get runs

Have you ever painted a car? It sounds like you're just blurting out random things you heard or what you think is logical.

Im still looking for some advice slighly more detailed than that....

A good site for alot of diy jobs is on the diy network...

try looking here, then explore the index on the left...lot of cool info to be had there....

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/ab_aut..._13675,00.html

There is a pretty detailed process on paint there, but you'll prolly end up going thru alot of the index yourself anyways...if your a true diy'er

But maybe someone should bring up how long you should wait inbetween coats, the way i understand it,the longer the better(at least in days vs hours)

Then again, this is somthing i want to get into, not somthing i do.

P.S. also, the angle of how you apply the basecoat is important too....side to side motion on first coat, then a 45degree for the second,or somthing like that...

Whatever,have fun.

c_rogue69, yes I have painted a car before. This is what I was told to do by a professional. Yes preporation does help it stick, the light mist aids in that also. You only hold the gun 24 inches from the surface for that first mist coat, like I had said. The guy I talked to said since when I was painting it was wet outside that would help keep dust down on the ground and out of the air.

Minus the fact I had to use single stage paint, it turned out well.

It doesn't matter if it's single stage or 3 stage pearl...if you know how to paint, then the type of paint doesn't matter. Single Stage sprays the same as b.c./c.c.

Flash times will depend on humidity /temp.when using base coat ,just wait till the paint flashes,or is hand slick/meaning you can rub your hand quickly along the surface with out it feeling sticky or sticking to it.I'm sure you can see the difference between wet and dry base coat, remember your base doesn't need to be glossy when dry,a flat appearence is normal.Use base coat tack cloths between coats and wipe good,(not hard) feeling for the little nibs that can form from either static sucking lint from your clothes or just paint falling back down on the surface in little balls kinda-like hail stone form.
