Weird tapping noise just over idle.
Hey guys---
2000 prelude. no mods. almost 60k
I hear a odd tapping kind of noise when the engine comes down to idle. When I have my head 'in' in the engine--and I pull on the cable for the accelerator, the engine revs--sounds fine. When the engine revs back down to idle, I can hear this odd tapping noise for a couple of secs before it goes to idle. It really only occurs from 1000 to 1200 rpms...
Otherwise the car is fine.
My thinking is that it may be time for a valve adjustment?
Maybe?

Your valves are probably in need of an adjustment at 60,000 miles. The recommended interval is 30,000 but I (as well as the rest of my friends that drive Hondas) adjust them every 15,000.

bones, i have the same problem, when i rev it from the throttle body it goes away, but then it comes back when it goes back to idle...i might adjust my valves when i get a free weekend..let me kno if u figure anythin out..ill do the same...thanks
i just changed my timing belt last weekend, pulled the motor to replace my reverse gear synchro blocking ring and sleeve. so now i have reverse again but i changed the t-belt also since it only take me 45 minutes to do with the engine on a skid. it was due in 15,000 miles but might as well change it when it takes less than an hour.

yankee..
its prob the autotensioner.
I'm getting a loaner out of it for the day (beat on some domestic POS tonight)--and the service guy was super cool about it.
Considering for the past 5 yrs, Ive only done oil, filters, brakes, tires, and radiator flush, I guess its about time for something, right?
Here is the question.
When they do the auto tensioner replacement. Do they replace the tensioner with the same malfunctioning OEM unit?
It would seem stupid to do so. I don't want to have this problem again at 120,000. I called Honda, and of course, they had no idea what part they are going to get.
Service rep "They should use a different part"
Me- " I know they SHOULD, but I want to know that THEY WILL"
Service rep- "Yeah..i know..the part should be different"
and it went like that. Im going to ask the mechanic to compare the two parts to see if its the exact same unit.
Stay tuned.

its probably valve lash adjustment
as far as the autotensioner thing...i had one fail a while ago, and yes the ones that they currently sell will also eventually fail. The thing is that they are only rated to last as long as the Timing belt itself, the tensioner is required to be changed with the belt so if you change it every time you shouldnt have a problem.
