Default Basic Questions about suspension

Ok, when my dad bought my 99 integra LS, he replaced the whole suspension with struts and springs that i think were recommended by the auto-shop he got it replaced in (he had to).

SO i was thinking about buying skunk2 or GC coilovers (after doing research) to give my car a better, lower, look. I asked my dad what kind of struts they installed and he said they were Macpherson struts.

Questions:

I was wondering IF the new coilovers would be compatible to the MacPherson struts (been on for a while)?

Are coilovers something that you have to replace the whole suspension?

Will i suffer consequences in the long run if i put the new coilovers with the partially new struts, or should iget a whole new suspension kit with new shocks/struts?

I am new to this stuff. Thank you.

oh and im on a tight budget, so im really leaning towards just getting the coilovers and not spending money on a whole new suspension kit.

Even though the shocks are new, the sound like OEM replacements and they won't stand up well to the stiffer spring rate of the Skunk2 or GC coilovers. You will need to upgrade the shocks if you want to run a coilover setup without the shocks blowing within a matter of months.

If you are on a tight budget, look into a set of KYB AGX shocks. They are 4 way adjustable and will stand up better to the stiffer coilovers much better than stock shocks will.

How much are you willing to spend?

i'm willing to spend $250-300 and less than $250 for shocks.

Overall, i want to spend not too far from $500

and what about lowering springs? are they any better than coilovers?

i want my car to look good lowered; im not primarily leaning towards performance, but i dont want an uncomfortable ride.

** any full coilover set-ups around $500 that you would recommend?

i also read about shocks with springs.

are those any different from a coilover system rather than just having a set drop?

For your budget, there will be no coilover that will not feel like complete shit driving down the road.

Springs are cheaper and a better bet if you are just looking to lower the car a little bit. The drop is not adjustable, but it is affordable, more comfortable, and your current shocks will hold up much better to springs than they will to coilovers.

The 3rd gen Integra doesn't have a MacPherson strut setup. It's more like a multilink setup. MacPherson struts bolt to the spindle like the RSX setup, whereas the 3rd gen Integra setup has the struts mounted on the lower control arm. Just wanted to clear that up, sorry, it was bothing me.

Right. I thought it was just an aftermarket OEM replacement brand.

So if that is the case, I am just going to assume that he used some sort of OEM replacement since the Macpherson setup wouldn't even work anyway.

Thanks a lot! that clears everything up! Lowering springs it is.

love these forums haha

one last question, what springs do you suggest with 16, maybe 17" rims?

i did some research and came up with tein, H&R, or skunk2. these sound good and im leaning towards tein s-tech lowering springs unless anyone can convince me otherwise?

thanks for everything
