Default Aiming at 170 WHP... suggestions?

I have a 98 GS-R here, looking at 170WHP (at least) without minimal internals work and those bolt ons.

Comptech intake & icebox
Comptech 4-2-1 headers
Comptech cat-back
Carsound high flow cat

I am pretty decided on those components.

Now I am looking for a camshafts upgrade and new ECU.

I've been looking at ITR cams, been remmended to use crower 403 cams and most of you here recommend JUN type III cams. Which one?

As for the ECU, what difference between comptech and hondata for instance?

I just want to stick witht he camshafts as for the only internal modification, but am I required to change something else along with them (so the engine won't take a crap on me). Camshaft gears? Should I or must I upgrade those too?

thanks in advance =)

how much are you getting to the wheels with just those?

I wouldn't be surprised if you broke 170 with just some good stage II cams (which would require replacing the valves, springs, and valve retainers). Although to get the best gains you'd definitely have to dyno tune with a V-AFC etc.

check out www.hondaswap.com to get all the cam profiles.. i just asked this yesterday...

if you are planning on upgrading your cams, i'd change the valvesprings, and retainers at the MINIMUM, or at least valvesprings for ITR cams.

I guess get a VAFC, crower cams, and have it tuned. You could be pretty close.

you only have one header :a:

hondata is a programmable engine management system. you burn a new rom everytime you want to change the settings and has tons of capabilties. the comptech ecu as far as i know is just a chip you put in the ecu.

if getting itr cams, at the least upgrade to itr valvesprings on the intake side and move your gsr intake springs over to the exhaust side.

Rip out your A/C and PS and get an AEM CAI and a good exhuast. Got me pretty damn close with a stock exhaust manifold and cat.

Damn, I was gonna recommend headwork too. ITR cams and headwork from Alaniz or Portflow can get you to 180whp tuned. :eek3:

Honestly, you might hit 170 whp with just those bolt ons, depending on the overall condition of your engine. You're only talking ~20 hp over stock.

Is that your final goal or just a stepping stone? If it's a stepping stone, forget that header and exhaust combo and move to 2.5 inches.

I would not go with the crower cams, my resources tell me they break, I'd rather go with the ITR cams and swap/change the valve's/springs

You gained like 15 whp by pulling out AC and PS? Is this a common gain? If it is, I can live without them both for 15 whp!
