I'm looking to buy a cheap bike to learn to ride on. I have two I'm looking at right now.
http://spokane.craigslist.org/mcy/1705359929.html
and
http://spokane.craigslist.org/mcy/1703702479.html

The second one looks nice but hasnt ran in 10 years. The first one runs but is running too rich(Sounds like a fairly easy fix?)

Input? What should I ask about the first one?
I'm asking about the second one because it would be fun to fix up but I'm not sure how much work and money will have to be put into it.

You will grow tired of those bikes in a months time, and they will probably cost more to fix than they're worth.
I would suggest a 90's ninja 250.

I looked at the thread title and I was like, "omg that's me now!" Lol.. But I've only had my first bike for like a month or so now and thus cannot give you any advice. h:

My Suzuki GS450 has been a lot of of fun so far though!

If you like working on carbs, the CB is the better bike. It most likely just needs to have carbs rebuild and old Hondas have a pretty good following still. I wouldn't mess with that dirt bike, you'll out grow a 50cc in about an hour.

 Ninja 250

The EX500 is the lowest I would go for a baby sportbike and even that is too light and underpowered to do much damage.

Buy a cheap 600 (CBR, Ninja etc.)
I wouldn't waste my money on less than a 600 for learning on.

Just my honest .02

h:

I learned on a Ninja 250. They are small, lightweight, easy to maneuver, and are fairly quick for what they are (as far as small bikes go,
I think they run like 14.5 or something in the 1/4 mile). :dunno:

And we're talking about Marshy here.

Not to mention they get ridiculous gas milage.

A dirtbike was actually the first thing I ever rode.
We were out in the desert all day and I was getting real comfortable on it.

Next day, my buddy brings over his ninja 250 for me to practice on.
I hop on, seem to be doing fine.

I take it around the block, and pull up at an intersection for the freeway onramp.

I stop and wait for it to get clear, then I go to turn right to get on the access road, but the bike doesn't turn. There are cars coming in the middle two lanes, so I start to freak out as I turn so wide I end up half way in the middle lane.

Got out of the way in time, but after that I realized the handlebars only turn about 5 inches. You have to LEAN the damn bike. lol

Felt pretty stupid afterwards.

I don't know about 250s but my 450 seems plenty fast enough for me with my first bike. I definitely wouldn't go any higher then a 600 though.
