if you don't plan on keeping the car for long, don't spend too much - just focus on reliability (timing belt, water pump, etc.). If you're using a mini-me, some sort of engine management wouldn't be a bad idea.

Then again, if you can afford a k20...

I'm using my stock wiring harness (b7) with a z6 head. I used a p28, too. You have to wire up the VTEC solenoid though, which will require a cheap harness that you can buy for like $20, or fabricate yourself for even less. It just accomodates a plug for the oil pressure sensor and the actual solenoid.

to the solenoid plug? yes - for a few bucks at the most.

I actually didn't do too much with the timing, though I wish I did.

For the ignition timing, I just rotated the distributor as close to stock timing as I could. I'm still 1 or 2 degrees off because I'm using a hacked up b7 distributor, and the housing only goes so far. I could file even more material off, but I don't want to weaken the frame even more than it already is.

For cam timing, I set it as close to 0 degrees as possible. I'm using an adjustable cam gear to correct for the 4.5 degrees off issue that many mini-me's encounter.

I did not take the car to any sort of shop. However, I am letting an experienced tuner handle wideband o2 tuning, since the equipment is on the expensive side.

I think you'll be fine; it really wasn't that hard. If you're completely stumped, then a shop can take care of it.
