It also depends on what kind of sound you're going for and of course, where and what you buy. You can get a pair of decent subs, a mono sub amp, and a box for that price. And like the others mentioned, speaker wires and an amp wiring kit is a must.

 

Go get a job at a car stereo retailer/installer and $400 for a nice system will be very possible

thats what i have and its a bit more than 400, but its loud and nice
